The beauty of the secondary characters in the Harry Potter series
Sure we love the main characters of the Harry Potter series but there is something about the secondary characters that we love more and that’s probably because we created a lot of their backstory.
The Harry Potter series is fun mainly because of its secondary characters. Let’s be honest, we love Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley but almost all of us love some other character more. With that though comes the knowledge that we love them probably because we created a world for them in our own world of fiction.
Fanfiction is often a source of comfort for fans. We love to write these characters and we either write them ourselves or use fanfic roleplay to write with other fans of the series. In doing that though, you create these backstories and narratives for the characters that supersede whatever was created in the actual cannon.
So, for many of us, these secondary characters are so important because of the world we created with them. Sure, in the actual series they probably have these same backstories but we used them to the best of their advantage and made them worthwhile in a way that the Potter series didn’t.
From Dean Thomas to the Marauders and even Romilda Vane, every character who had a name and a moment got to live on for fans outside of the written page and that, in a lot of ways, is what makes Potter special. Not the overall story but the world that we, as fans, got to create with one another and the characters that we had come to love.
