Staff of Rowling’s Publisher threaten to walk after the author’s controversial statements
J.K. Rowling was working on a new story, the Ickabog, but her publisher’s staff is threatening to walk after her transphobic comments and blog post went viral.
The Ickabog may now be in danger as staff from Hachette UK threaten to walk over J.K. Rowling’s comments on Twitter. Which, rightfully so. Rowling has made quite the waves when she took to Twitter (and then a personal blog post) to share her ideas of gender politics and, particularly, her issues with the trans community.
Now, the publishers are facing a hard decision as they were meant to be releasing her latest children’s book The Ickabog.
To be quite honest, it shouldn’t run or if parents want to continue to teach her stories to their kids, that’s on them, but Rowling continuing to build her empire despite many fans turning away from her work after the comments. The fact that the publisher’s own employees are contemplating walking should send a very clear message about the novel and working with J.K. Rowling.
There has been many conversations about Rowling having the right to her own opinion and sure but that opinion is harmful to an entire community of people. It isn’t like she tweeted out that she prefers chunky peanut butter to smooth. She, essentially, said that she does not view trans women as women and with the current world and the hardships facing the LGBTQ+ community, that messaging from someone with Rowling’s platform is incredibly harmful.
So good on those staff members who are taking a stand and hopefully we reevaluate The Ickabog after this because Rowling’s comments are incredibly hateful and harmful.
