Meg March is an interesting character because she’s not as determined as her sisters to be free of the life they lead and Emma Watson did a wonderful job bringing her to life.

Emma Watson brought Meg March to life in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and while many do not like Meg as a sister, she’s an incredibly important character to the novel. The March sisters are comprised of Jo, Beth, Meg, and Amy. While I personally relate to and love Amy March the best, she wouldn’t be able to be the free spirit she is (and neither would Jo) if it wasn’t for Meg.

The oldest March sister, Meg is the kind of girl who loved having these fun adventures and acting with her sisters but was also okay with having a family and settling down without these grand dreams of something bigger. Amy and Jo wanted to push the envelope but Meg was content to live within her means.

Now, many of our pop culture heroines focus on pushing the envelope but characters like Meg are important to remind us that no matter our dreams and aspirations, they’re valid. Jo wanted her sister to want more for herself but Meg just didn’t, she was happy and that’s what mattered to her. And both women are completely valid in that.

Meg is important because she’s not trying to write the best novel or be a painter or be a musician (like Beth). She just falls in love and is happy in that part of her life and that’s just as valid and worthwhile as the dreams of her sisters.
