If you stop and look up the characters of the Harry Potter series, it is surprising to note that there are twice as many male characters as there are female characters.

Hermione Granger might be an iconic character from the Harry Potter series but she is not part of a large following of women. Meaning that the series has a lot more male characters than female characters in it. And why is that?

Who really knows but it is interesting to look at considering and seeing just how many female characters are also secondary characters or historical figures just named or in the show briefly. It’s also interesting because so many of us focus our energy on the male characters that we’ve come to know and love.

For so many, their favorite character is Harry or Ron or any of the Marauders and even if Hermione is your favorite character, it usually comes with another favorite of one of the men. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but it is interesting to look at and the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series doesn’t seem like it’s much better.

Sure, there is Queenie, Tina, and Leta but there double the amount of men in the films (Newt, Jacob, Grindelwald, Creedence, Dumbledore….get it?). If the series is to carry on, there needs to be a change. A few female characters that are iconic in a sea of male characters doesn’t do anything but give us the option to focus on those male characters instead and that’s not fair to characters like Hermione Granger.
