Want to help support the trans community as a Harry Potter fan? Here are some organizations!
J.K. Rowling has continued to double down on transphobic remarks and for many fans, it can feel like you’re lost at what to do. Here are some organizations that help the trans community to donate to!
If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter series, like myself, and you feel for fans who are hurt by J.K. Rowling’s transphobic remarks, you might be looking for ways to support fellow fans and for information on ways to donate to some organizations that help the trans community.
Harry Potter actress Katie Leung, who played Cho Chang in the series, recently has shared a number of helpful resources. I’m going to highlight the links that Leung shared because I think it’s important to see how actors from the Harry Potter series are using their platforms to fight against the harmful words Rowling continues to spread online.
The first is a GoFundMe created to help Homeless Black trans-women that live in Atlanta.
Leung also posted a link to a petition in the U.K to help protect Black trans-women there. Often there are no helplines or any kind of support for the trans community, especially the Black trans community and it is important to sign and support where we can.
Vice recently released a wonderful list of organizations to donate to that have been created to help those in the Black trans community, which has since been shared by fellow Harry Potter alum Emma Watson.
If you have the means to donate to these organizations, please do. Otherwise, sign petitions where you can and figure out how to do your part to help the trans community because the Harry Potter series taught us to look out for each other.
