Katie Leung takes to promoting trans organizations in the aftermath of Rowling’s comments
Want to know Katie Leung’s thoughts on Cho Chang? Well, instead, you’re going to see her support for the trans community in a beautiful show of solidarity.
Katie Leung may have helped bring Cho Chang to life on screen but she’s now taking stand against J.K. Rowling’s transphobic remarks and promoting organizations fans can donate to that will help the trans community.
It’s been a strange time to be a fan of the Harry Potter series but watching as celebrities have stepped forward to voice their dismay and opposing viewpoints to creator J.K. Rowling has proven that this series is more than just what Rowling thinks she has given us.
Being a fan of Harry Potter means looking to each other and the world that was given to us. Often, we care about the characters and our friends we made along the way more than those behind the scenes. I know that I love Sirius Black and his story more than anything J.K. Rowling could give me because fans focused their energy on these stories, not her. So to see Katie Leung standing up against the author is inspiring.
The thread started simple enough. Leung posted about Cho Chang to get the attention of fans.
From there, the thread listed trans organizations that fans could donate to help the trans community and, specifically, the Black trans community.
What this shows is that fans don’t have to just sit back and agree with Rowling’s remarks and neither do the creatives who worked on the Harry Potter series. Seeing Katie Leung step up and use her platform to oppose Rowling is wonderfully inspiring and I hope that other cast members from the films do the same to show their support of the trans community.
