Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: What’s going on with Simmons?
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD hasn’t yet played all the cards in its hand for its final season. And we have some pressing questions about Jemma Simmons.
Everyone in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has a lot of crap going on this season. We really did just jump into the action with no time for a respite.
Some of the bigger highlights include May being brought back from the dead and saying how she feels nothing. She doesn’t even flinch when she sees LMD Coulson and readily goes back under for more study and tweaking.
Meanwhile, Elena is struggling with her own powers. Dealing with the Shrike inside of her last season certainly freaked her out. But it’s probably more than that. We just haven’t seen enough of her this season.
But the one that feels really bothersome in these first few episodes is Jemma Simmons.
We know what Simmons is capable of. She may have started out as a squint in a lab in season one, but she’s gone from going undercover at Hydra to almost being killed by Grant Ward to being stranded on an alien planet … and that doesn’t include anything that happened in the Framework. She’s definitely evolved into a much broader character.
But this still feels a little too suspicious and cagey. She has yet to tell Deke, Mack, and Daisy just how much time has passed. She won’t say where Fitz is. She’s being far too selective on the information she’s doling out.
Because, really: How much time has passed?
I’m starting to wonder if she isn’t an LMD. Did 60 or 70 years pass, and the real FitzSimmons are dead and gone? She could very well be a Coulson-like LMD with her own likeness and memories. She’s just a little more robotic than usual.
The other possibility is that she’s wearing tech, like Agent 33 in that May vs. May fight from a few seasons ago, and Simmons is more like 70 years old. Daisy and Mack wouldn’t be able to handle seeing her so old or know that much time has passed, but Deke would be ecstatic to see his grandma again.
I’m sure Simmons’ reveal, whatever it is, will come in due time. Agents of SHIELD is good about withholding information just long enough so that we’re kept in suspense, but not long enough to make us angry.
