If you happened to see Avengers: Infinity War in theaters, you likely witnessed the collective gasp from the audience when Tony Stark was stabbed through the middle by Thanos at the end of the film. But just when it seemed he’d die trying to protect the Infinity Stones, Doctor Strange makes a bargain to spare his life — knowing, of course, that he’d sacrifice it again later.

Tony, who doesn’t know why Doctor Strange would do such a thing, is understandably distraught — particularly once his friends begin disappearing around him. His reaction is one of his most emotional scenes in the Infinity Saga, and watching him struggle to save Peter Parker is its own painful experience.

Not only does this moment showcase the full range of emotions, though, but it shows what kind of hero Tony is. He was willing to sacrifice his life to stop Thanos, even then, but he never wanted the people he cared about to suffer.

Heck, even Thanos was able to muster up some respect for Tony in his almost final moments. Coming from Thanos, “I hope they remember you” is as good a compliment as any.
