Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season 7 premiere preview: Back in time
This week, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD returns to action for its final season! Where did we leave our SHIELD crew? Let’s catch up and jump back to the 1930s.
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD left us last August with one heck of a cliffhanger. With an LMD Coulson and the Zephyr now able to time travel, our SHIELD team found themselves staring out at an Empire State Building still under construction.
With the threat of alien destruction looming on the horizon.
Here is the official synopsis for season 7’s premiere, “The New Deal,” courtesy of ABC:
"“Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are thrust backward in time and stranded in 1931 New York City. With the all-new Zephyr set to time-jump at any moment, the team must hurry to find out exactly what happened. If they fail, it would mean disaster for the past, present and future of the world.”"
For you U.S. history nerds, the New Deal was also the series of programs and regulations Franklin D. Roosevelt rolled out in the U.S. between 1933 and 1939 (including the Social Security Administration). Of course Agents of SHIELD is now two years before that, but the title of this premiere still makes me chuckle.
American history aside, the previews for the premiere make me long for the days of Marvel’s Agent Carter. Let’s just say our SHIELD crew looks quite dapper in period clothing:
So where do we go from here? Well, as LMD Coulson uttered in the first teaser for this season, they have to save HYDRA. Which seems counter-productive to everything SHIELD stands for, but okay.
At the end of last season, SHIELD was battling Sarge and Izel on one front and Chronicoms and hunters on another, far away front that quickly finds its way to Earth. While the team did defeat Sarge and Izel, it came at the cost of May nearly dying and the team having to jump back in time to escape the Chronicoms.
Unfortunately, they know everything about SHIELD, and the team is in desperate need of an expert. Enter life model decoy Coulson. And … 1931 Manhattan.
There are so many places this season can go, especially when it comes to time travel and, well, ignoring the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All we know for sure is that this will be a bittersweet final season for Agents of SHIELD, and we’re with them until the end of the line.
