2. Season 5, Episode 12: “The Real Deal”

Poor Fitz and Simmons, they’re like the Luke and Laura of the MCU. They started out as two awkward and shy — but brilliant — agents who did a relationship the right way. They were friends first, partners really, and their friendship eventually began to grow into something more. Then a space-manipulating monolith happened. Then the Framework happened. Then time travel happened. Then Fitz got kidnapped. Then space travel happened. But, finally, in this episode, Fitz and Simmons get married.

The 100th episode starts off rather bleak, with Coulson coming clean to the team that his bargain with Ghost Rider at the end of season 4 burnt up whatever healed him from the fatal injury he suffered at the hands of Loki in Avengers. Coulson was dying, and this was yet another setback the team had to deal with. The news struck Daisy and May, who are often looked at as his surrogate daughter and work wife, particularly hard. Both swore that they wouldn’t stop until they found a way to save him, even though Coulson himself took a more zen approach to his situation.

After the team defeats conjured villains from past seasons created by a fear dimension (long story), they’re finally able to take a breath and stand still long enough for Leopold Fitz and Jemma Simmons to become husband and wife. The romantic pairing at the heart of the show was officially official, and fans of the show loved it.

In a fear dimension-generated forest, Coulson presided over the ceremony, with May, Daisy, Mack, Deke (Jeff Ward), and even Mike Peterson/Deathlok (J. August Richards, who returned for the episode). Though their love would still see struggles in the near future, their commitment to one another just grew stronger. As Daisy, the biggest FitzSimmons shipper of all, once said, “… through all the insane crap we have gone through, the one thing I’ve known without a doubt, the whole time, is that you and Fitz belong together.”
