Bob’s Burgers: Our 10 favorite episodes, ranked by how much we love them
2. Season 3, Episode 15: “O.T. The Outside Toilet”
Nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program and featuring Jon Hamm as a talking toilet, “O.T. The Outside Toilet” is Bob’s Burgers at its best.
Narrow in focus and specific with its references, “O.T. The Outside Toilet” centers on Gene’s friendship with a fancy toilet he finds abandoned in the woods that he soon decides to protect at all costs after flopping with his first brush at “parenthood” during a class project.
A loose homage to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the episode also plays on Gene’s established character traits and literal toilet humor without ever veering into gross potty humor.
Additionally, Bob and Linda’s storyline revolving around a date night out provides additional laughs as they enjoy their time away from the kids a little too much, getting so drunk Linda doesn’t remember the word taxi.
When the two stories eventually intersect, the climax is both suspenseful and endearing, including Gene’s final goodbye to the toilet as it’s returned to its rightful owners. Rather than play the moment for straight laughs, Bob’s Burgers takes the moment seriously, because its characters do, another example of what makes the show work so well.
