The Narrative

First-person narration can be difficult to pull off, but Collins does it seamlessly throughout The Hunger Games. In part, this is probably because Katniss is such a relatable protagonist, making it easy to step into her shoes. But Collins’ writing style also deserves some credit for this, delivering a well-written, easy-to-read story that absolutely flies by.

Collins’ combination of short, choppy, stream-of-consciousness sentences and longer, more descriptive prose inserts the reader directly into Katniss’ mind — which is both a fascinating and devastating place to be. The author also never fails to focus in on the darker, gorier parts of the story, making the bleakness of these books an almost tangible element.

Also, shoutout to The Hunger Games for giving us some of the best YA quotes of all time. We still have chills from hearing Katniss say the words “If we burn, you burn with us.” (And now we’ll be reading Mockingjay again, thank you very much.)
