Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s forthcoming novel — and Ryan Gosling has already signed on to star in it.
Andy Weir is best known for writing The Martian, but it turns out the author has another book coming out next year — and it’s already being adapted into a movie. Variety reports that the project has been picked up by MGM, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller signing on to direct and produce the film. The more exciting news, though, is that Ryan Gosling is going to star in the movie — so, basically, we’ll be swooning the entire time we’re watching no matter what it’s about.
And plot details are fairly sparce at the moment, given that Weir’s novel hasn’t been published or even given a title yet. “Project Hail Mary” is what the book is being referred to as currently, but if MGM and Gosling are to be believed, the untitled manuscript is going to be well worth picking up. It’s being published in 2021 by Random House, so be sure to look out for it.
The most we know about the film thus far comes from Entertainment Weekly, which reports that it will focus on “lone astronaut on a spaceship who is trying to save the planet.” That’s par for the course with movies like these, so we’ll have to wait for more updates to see what sets this story apart from others like it.
In addition to Lord, Miller, and Gosling, Amy Pascal, Ken Kao, Aditya Sood, and Weir will also serve as producers on the film. It’s not the first time Pascal has worked with Lord and Miller — and if their previous projects are anything to go by, this one is in good hands.
