Last Girls – Demetra Brodsky
Demetra Brodsky’s Last Girls is a twisty dystopian story of survival, family and secret compounds, all set in the world of doomsday preppers. A unique and, sadly, unexpectedly timely story for the world we’re currently living in – how’s your toilet paper stash these days? – this is definitely one of the most unexpected offerings on our round-up list this month.
Sisters Honey, Blue, and Birdie Juniper – a high school senior, junior and sophomore respectively – live with their mother in The Nest, a secret compound in Washington state inhabited by a group of people convinced that they end of the world is coming.
The three sisters share an extremely special bond thanks to their unique lifestyle and experiences – they’ve moved five times in ten years – as well as the fact that traditional extracurricular teen activities outside the compound are frowned upon.
But when secrets began to be revealed and danger is suddenly everywhere, the Juniper sisters will have reason to be very glad that they’ve been raised to know how to take care of themselves.
The official synopsis describes the story as follows.
"No one knows how the world will end. On a secret compound in the Washington wilderness, Honey Juniper and her sisters are training to hunt, homestead, and protect their own. Prepare for every situation. But when danger strikes from within, putting her sisters at risk, training becomes real life, and only one thing is certain: Nowhere is safe."
Last Girls is available on May 5.
