There is a mutual love many fans have for Professor Trelawney and part of that comes from the fact that she didn’t deserve to get thrown out of Hogwarts in the way Umbridge did it.

Professor Trelawney is the kind of character who may have been an annoying character in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban but then Dolores Umbridge showed up. When Umbridge came to Hogwarts, any professor who was maybe not our favorite suddenly became a character we cared about when Umbridge tried to ruin their lives.

It sucks but that’s what happens because she’s literally that terrible of a person. Dolores Umbridge has no redeeming qualities and it is made worse by the way she reacted to Professor Trelawney. Most of the professors at Hogwarts live there and have no other means outside of the school. So when Umbridge decided to throw her out and fire her in front of the entire school, it left Trelawney without any kind of way to survive and Umbridge refused to care.

So yes, Umbridge was a terrible person all around but what she did to Trelawney made it so much worse for her as a character and Trelawney ended up becoming a beloved teacher that we, as fans, wanted to protect. It’s simple, you hurt Trelawney now and you’re our enemy and so Umbridge, who was already a character we hated, was suddenly someone even worse.

Would we love Trelawney as much if it hadn’t been Umbridge to throw her out? Who knows but at least we will always want to protect Professor Trelawney now more than not.
