Issa Rae rom-com The Lovebirds to get Netflix release

The Lovebirds, a romantic comedy starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, was originally slated for a theatrical release but will now be moved to Netflix.
Movie premieres are pretty hit or miss these days. Multiple movies, including the highly anticipated Black Widow solo movie and the Wonder Woman: 1984 sequel, have had their release dates pushed back due to the COVID-19 outbreak. However, there have been a few films that have made the successful tradition from big screen to VOD small stream, such as Invisible Man and Birds of Prey. Now, Netflix is getting in on the act by picking up the Issa Rae romantic comedy The Lovebirds.
Originally planned to premiere at SXSW and then release in theaters nationwide on April 3, the movie will instead be released on May 22 via Netflix. Paramount opted to have the streaming giant handle the release after SXSW was canceled and movie theaters across the country closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Co-stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani took to Instagram this week to announce the revised release date.
In The Lovebirds, Rae and Nanjiani play a couple who are on the brink of breaking up when they suddenly find themselves entangled in a bizarre murder mystery. The two work together to clear their names and solve the case, while also trying to figure out how they — and their relationship — can make it through the night. The movie also stars Paul Sparks (House of Cards), Anna Camp (the Pitch Perfect trilogy), and Kyle Bornheimer (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).
Rae is also currently starring in season four of her hit HBO comedy series Insecure. Rae serves as creator, writer, and star of the show. Meanwhile, Nanjiani will be portraying cosmic-powered Kingo, in the MCU’s upcoming The Eternals film. The Eternals is currently scheduled to be released in February of 2021, with principal photography having already been completed as of February 2020.
