Grey’s Anatomy: Predicting who finds love in season 17
By Meg Dowell
With Grey’s Anatomy’s 16th season behind us, let’s look ahead at who might end up with whom (and who will probably end up alone).
The Season 16 finale of Grey’s Anatomy left us with a lot of questions, despite wrapping up a few important loose ends. The “will they/won’t they” between Meredith and “McWidow” is still ongoing, and there still seems to be a third wheel named DeLuca hovering off to the side.
Here’s what we do know: Richard and Catherine are probably over for good (finally). And Amelia and Link couldn’t be happier now that they’ve met their son for the first time.
But what’s going to happen with Teddy and Owen? Will they confront each other, or just part ways without directly addressing the issue? And what about Jo — is she ready to find love again, now that Alex is for sure never coming back?
Let’s toss around some predictions. Maybe some of these Grey’s Anatomy characters will finally settle down and find happiness while others (or maybe just one in particular) will end up alone next season.
Maggie and Amelia both get happy endings
What happened between Winston and Maggie at that conference sure felt like a fever dream, but maybe that was the point. Maybe she’s spent way too much time overthinking all of her relationships, and this is her finally realizing she deserves to take a chance and see where things lead.
Do we even need to mention he’s absolutely perfect for her? They balance each other out.
Speaking of happy endings, let’s hope things between Link and Amelia stay exactly as they are. Even if something does end up happening with their son’s health somewhere down the line, it’s about time Grey’s proves it really can keep a good relationship together for the long-term.
Owen becomes the best single dad ever
This man has tried and failed a countless number of times to settle down with a partner, and so far it just hasn’t worked out for him. Even now when he’s finally growing up and doing things right, Teddy still betrayed him in the absolute worst way possible.
That’s why it’s officially time for Owen Hunt to accept and embrace the #SingleDadLife. He has always wanted kids, and he adores the ones he has. He could even add a few more to the mix — and he doesn’t even need a woman for that, technically.
Let’s just let him be happy with the one thing he’s always wanted all along: a family. He’s always assumed a family included a wife. Maybe for him it doesn’t have to.
DeLuca and Jo fall in love for real
Hear me out before you dismiss the possibility. They were together once — and it was going OK until Alex completely lost it. Nothing against him, he was still working through some stuff. But now that he’s happy and out of the picture, it’s the perfect time for the universe to bring these two back together again.
They’ve both been through a lot, and more importantly, they have both experienced firsthand what it’s like to survive a mental health crisis even if DeLuca hasn’t quite admitted it yet. They understand each other. They had — still have? — chemistry, too.
Maybe it’s not the right time just yet — he has a long road of recovery ahead of him, and that’s if he decides to accept help. But once he’s worked through some of those hardships, maybe these two will find each other. It could happen.
Yes, Meredith and McWidow get there eventually
Maggie and Meredith are currently polar opposites when it comes to their romantic storylines. Where Maggie and Winston’s love story started at 100 miles an hour and has yet to slow down, Meredith and Hayes have barely made any progress toward anything that could technically be considered a first date.
But they have made progress. And the show has put a lot of effort into slowly revealing more and more about him, the same way Meredith has slowly opened up to him about her past.
For both of them, it seems like the perfect way to do it. Slow, but meaningful. By the time they get to the “I love you” stage, it’s going to be hard to argue they’re in it for the long haul.
Catherine and Tom will be miserable together
We know a little more about Tom’s backstory than we did before, and he has gained some much-deserved sympathy. But let’s be honest: He’s still encouraging Teddy to be with him even after he told her he didn’t want to be the one she cheats with. He’s had his moments, but he’s still making selfish choices.
And doesn’t that make him and Catherine the perfect match? It’s pretty obvious she respects him, or has at least known him long enough that she wouldn’t try to manipulate him the way she did to Richard. Plus he would never let her do that. They’re both equally headstrong and self-absorbed — just enough to actually, maybe, make a romance work.
She (hopefully) won’t be getting back together with Richard anytime soon (or ever). And let’s hope Tom and Teddy don’t last much longer. Tom does deserve better than her.
Teddy will end up alone because she had her chance and ruined it
Grey’s Anatomy has done its best to try and make us feel sorry for her, but that doesn’t excuse what she did.
Whether you believe the theories about her sending that voicemail on purpose or not, she actively chose not to own up to her (repeated) mistake. At least when Owen cheated on Cristina he looked her in the eye and admitted it.
Maybe Teddy just needs to go off and be single for a while. Date around, find a guy or gal that will actually give her what she wants. Whatever that is. (We’re not even sure if she knows).
