Don’t Call the Wolf – Aleksandra Ross

A good old fashioned battle with a dragon is at the heart of author Aleksandra Ross’ debut fantasy novel Don’t Call the Wolfa tale inspired by Polish folklore.

In this story, a vicious golden dragon reigns over a magical kingdom. It’s been 17 years since the creature killed the royal family and destroyed the palace, bringing pestilence and darkness to the land. Their hope lies in Ren, a 17 year-old shapeshifter and Lukasz, a young and handsome dragon slayer from a clan known as the Wolf-Lords. (Why aren’t they called Dragon Lords? It’s a mystery.)

Lukasz is the last surviving member of ten siblings, and Ren distrusts humans and prefers to stay in her animal form. But in the end, the two forge an uneasy truth: Ren will help guide Lukasz home to the mountains of his people, if he’ll slay the Golden Dragon for her. Surely, nothing will go wrong.

The story’s official synopsis sounds eerie and dark.

"When the Golden Dragon descended on the forest of Kamiena, a horde of monsters followed in its wake. Ren, the forest’s young queen, is slowly losing her battle against them. Until she rescues Lukasz—the last survivor of a heroic regiment of dragon slayers—and they strike a deal. She will help him find his brother, who vanished into her forest… if Lukasz promises to slay the Dragon. But promises are all too easily broken"

Don’t Call the Wolf is available on April 28.
