Sure, everyone can be a fan of the Harry Potter series but there will always be a special place for those of us who grew up reading the Harry Potter series as it was released.

The Harry Potter generation can be described as a group of millennials who read the Harry Potter series as they were growing up because that is when the series was being released. To be clear, those of who were part of the Potter generation are not better fans of the series or anything like that, it’s just different for us.

Let me explain, I remember being a kid and rushing to the midnight premiere of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone because that was the first time I’d get to see Harry live and in the flesh. I remember my teacher assigning us the book and reading it so quickly she didn’t know what to do.

I remember going to the midnight releases of the books, going to every midnight premiere, and I remember waiting to finish The Deathly Hallows until I was getting ready to leave for college so that my childhood could end with the book that defined it.

It’s just different. We all grew up reading them together and have similar experiences because that’s just what we knew and it’s one of the few fandoms that was, in a lot of ways, ours. It’s like the kids who get to now say they’ve grown up watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s something that defines them just like the release of the Harry Potter books defines us.
