The Bold Type season 4 episode 9 review: A bachelorette bash
By Andi Ortiz
We can all agree that Sutton Brady is the only Bachelorette we care about right now, right? Her party was one for the ages — and one for the ‘gram.
I have a lot of questions for the writers of The Bold Type. Number one: How dare you?
How dare you make us wait FOUR SEASONS to see Kat, Jane, and Sutton do a choreographed dance? Thank you for the karaoke night ABBA performance, but where has this been?!
In all fairness, the timing was perfect for this dance. Having a choreographed dance battle with strangers is a Sutton Brady bachelorette party if there ever was one. But perhaps even more on brand for Sutton is how the night actually went.
Because of course she put everything on hold to make things right for Oliver and Scarlet before she leaves. Sutton would do that even if she wasn’t leaving. And of course she’d make things right by taking a limo to sneak onto a closed studio set to stalk an influencer she pissed off.
She wasn’t taking her clothes off this time though. That was a one time New Jersey thing. Sutton’s humor truly is a gift to this world.
Question number two of the night: Did Alice Knight take professional grudge-holding lessons? Sutton didn’t even really mess up Alice’s Audi shoot, but Alice is still mad enough to not take an incredible job at Scarlet just to avoid Sutton?
And then to add insult to injury — but also, some comedy; did anyone else get the vibe that Meghann Fahy ad-libbed her comments to the security guard? — she tries to have Sutton forcibly removed from the premises.
It’s impressive, but it all felt a bit dramatic, even for an influencer like Alice Knight.
Worry not, though. As expected, Alice ended up joining in on the bachelorette festivities and tagged Sutton on Instagram. With that, Sutton now has north of 64 thousand followers, and a full-time styling gig waiting for her at Scarlet. She just doesn’t know it yet.
With that comes question number three: Sweet writers, you’re not actually moving Sutton to San Fransisco, are you? If not, thank you. But also, that doesn’t mean Suttard is breaking up again, does it?
What if Richard just comes back and takes over RJ Safford’s job? With Kat’s revelation that RJ does in fact support this Alabama senator financially — again, as expected — it seems unlikely that the scenario will end with him still running Scarlet.
Even if it means Kat loses her job in the process, it’s probably a sacrifice she’s willing to make. That said, her cockiness at getting around RJ and the board more than a few times is starting to show and it is worrisome. Kat might get a little more reckless this time.
Well, not “might get.” She is getting more reckless. Going to RJ’s personal assistant to get personal financial records of his is … not a great look. Richard’s not wrong when he talks about the legality of it all. If the fallout is bad enough, Kat might not get another job at any reputable outlet.
But Kat’s also not wrong in that she could go live with Sutton and Richard in San Fransisco. Season five of The Bold Type on the west coast could be real fun. All they need now is Jane.
Poor sweet Tiny Jane. Even when everything goes her way, there’s always something. Tonight, she finally got her vertical, on top of becoming one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 writers to watch. But in the end, it all came back to Ryan.
No, he didn’t just kiss a girl on his book tour. He slept with her. And Jane’s known, at least on some level, for awhile. She’s known all along really. It’s heartbreaking to watch the realization, but the resulting confrontation was some of Katie Stevens’s best work this season.
And so comes question number four: Was this the nail in Janestripe’s coffin? Stevens herself has talked openly about wanting to tell a different kind of cheating story with this arc, one where it’s not just black and white. But for Jane, this feels pretty final.
Then again, we might still get that different cheating story. Jacqueline’s marriage seems to still have some life in it. But now she’s the one who technically cheated, even though she and Ian were separated. Oh boy — it’s another “We were on a break” situation.
One last question before we go: Am I a bad millennial for not knowing the term “pole vault” before tonight? Is that a real thing that we’re saying now?
The Bold Type airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on Freeform.
