Social Distance and Binge: What to watch on Netflix this week
By Sabrina Reed
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker
It’s Women’s History Month, so it’s fitting that a series about self-made millionaire, Madam C.J. Walker, is hitting Netflix during a time when the accomplishments of trailblazing women are being honored and celebrated.
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker follows its titular character from the beginning of her journey in hair care to her rise as a businesswoman in a male dominated industry. But sexism and misogyny aren’t the only topics this series is prepared to tackle, racism and colorism are at the top of the list, too.
Walker was a woman who defied expectations. She didn’t stay in her “place” or let society box her up and pack her away so others can make goods and turn a profit while she does what she’s told. Walker didn’t let others define what her lane was, she made her own, and in doing so she changed her life and those around her.
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker drops March 20 on Netflix.
Social distancing isn’t the only practice the CDC recommends to protect yourself and prevent the spread of coronavirus. For a full list of recommendations refer to their guidelines.
