Batwoman

At this point, you either love the superhero genre or you don’t — and much like reboots and revivals, the quality will vary. The latest addition to The CW’s Arrowverse, Batwoman, is probably one of the best superhero shows on television right now. (I said what I said.)

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Batwoman follows Bruce Wayne’s cousin, Kate Kane, as she struggles to overcome her demons and tragic past to become Gotham City’s new protector/vigilante Batwoman, following the disappearance of Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Some of you may be familiar with Batman’s backstory and say that this sounds awfully familiar. The show keeps the same dark and gritty tone as past Batman movies, but it adds sprinkles of hope and optimism. Ruby Rose portrays Kate Kane/Batwoman, who is also the first lesbian superhero played by a queer actress. The show doesn’t shy away from it’s gayness, and it’s all the better for it. We see Kate go on dates, in bed with other women, and experience heartbreak; all scenes not usually included in mainstream television.

The amazingly talented cast includes Nicole Kang, Meagan Tandy, Dougray Scott, and, in a tour de force role, Rachel Skarsten. Batwoman is available for streaming through The CW app.
