The final trailer for Marvel’s Black Widow dropped this week, and it gave fans further insight into the film’s plot and villain. What did we learn?

Marvel’s Black Widow will be the first Phase 4 film to hit theaters, and it’s one of the frachise’s biggest releases of the year. Fans have seen several trailers for the upcoming addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe already, but this week, they got the final one — and it gave quite a bit more insight into what Natasha Romanoff’s solo adventure has in store for viewers.

While the previous glimpses of the film confirmed what most fans already guessed — that this prequel would dive into Natasha’s dark past in the Red Room — they withheld some important plot pieces. They showed Natasha teaming up with her old assassin family and taking on Taskmaster, but the why was very much a mystery. This new preview makes Natasha’s reasoning for returning to her old home clearer — and it shows a lot more of Taskmaster in the process.

While the latest trailer for Black Widow does rehash a few scenes we’ve already seen before, much of the footage is new — along with several of the voiceovers. With that in mind, what did we learn from the final look at the film?

We’ll Find Out Why Natasha Disappeared

The new trailer opens with a comical moment between Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Natasha, during which Yelena tells her friend the story she made up surrounding her absence. “You’re a science teacher,” Yelena explains. “Your husband, he renovates houses. You’re thinking about moving, but you’re waiting for the interest rates to go down.” Natasha laughs this off, but this moment makes it clear that most of the people Natasha left behind don’t quite know what happened to her.

And if Marvel fans are being honest, we don’t know either. The reasoning behind Natasha’s leaving isn’t immediately clear, and one has to wonder whether it has anything to do with the “mistakes” she talks about making directly after this clip. It’ll be nice to get a more in-depth backstory for this Avengers team member we’ve come to love, and to find out how she wound up on the Avengers in the first place.

Taskmaster Is in Control of the Red Room

The final trailer for Black Widow shows more of Taskmaster than all of the others combined, and it also makes it clear why Natasha’s returning to face him in the first place. Yelena explains here that Taskmaster is currently the one controlling the Red Room — and that he’s influencing all of the assassins-to-be, giving them little choice in their actions.

Natasha later says they’ll need to return to where their lives as assassins began, insisting that they need to ensure “they never do that to anyone again.” And the shots of the assassins under Taskmaster’s control show a zombie-like army of killers — one that Natasha and her friends may need to face off against, even if they don’t want to.

With that in mind, Black Widow is likely to bring back a lot of painful memories for Natasha, even if she is amongst her original family once more. On the bright side, the new trailer also ends with a bit of humor — so it looks like the film will maintain Marvel’s usual balance of suspense and comedy when it arrives on May 1.
