When You Were Everything by Ashley Woodfolk

Known for The Beauty That Remains, Ashley Woodfolk is back withWhen You Were Everything, a YA contemporary novel that puts friendship at the forefront of its story — and honestly, that in itself is enough reason to pick this book up this month.

When You Were Everything opens with the “implosion” of a friendship, picking up almost a month after Cleo and Layla stopped being BFFs. Cleo wishes she could forget the two of them were ever friends — trashing every memory in the process — but anyone who’s ever lost a friend knows it’s never that clean or easy. And to make matters worse, Cleo winds up being Layla’s tutor — a definite snag in the plan to forget she exists, and something that will likely cause some awkwardness to arise. As per the book’s synopsis:

"“Despite budding new friendships with other classmates—and a raging crush on a gorgeous boy named Dom—Cleo’s turbulent past with Layla comes back to haunt them both.”"

Speaking of their past together, When You Were Everything is also told between alternating perspectives, shifting between past and present to tell the story. Readers who enjoy watching the narrative unfurl little by little will want to keep this one on their radar — and obviously, anyone looking for an emotional read about friendship will want to do the same.

When You Were Everything hits shelves on March 10, and it will be available in print, ebook, and audiobook when it does.
