Ever watch a villain in a movie use a phone and wonder why they’re never on that Apple iPhone life? Well, it’s because the company won’t let villains use their phones.

Have you ever watched a movie and tried to see who was an Apple user and who wasn’t?

It’s a fun game because, if you see your phone on the screen, you can point out when something isn’t working right quite easily. Or maybe that’s a bad thing. Whatever. The point is, Apple has a prominent place in our pop culture these days, and sometimes, their products are in our films. But, apparently, there are rules to who can and cannot have an Apple iPhone or a Mac.

While talking with Vanity FairKnives Out director Rian Johnson made a great point about Apple and who gets to use its products in movies and television shows.

"“I don’t know if i should say this or not. Not because it’s like lascivious or something, but because it’s going to screw me on the next mystery movie that I write. Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies, but — and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie — bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.”"

Now, let’s think about it. From what I can tell, on the show You, Joe never has an iPhone for himself, just the phones he’s stolen from others around him. Thanos? He probably wouldn’t be able to talk to the Genius bar (but then again, Stark Phones rule the MCU so … he’d have to talk to Tony Stark anyway).

The point is, it makes for an interesting journey into future viewings of both movies and television. Especially with a “whodunit” like Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. Without knowing who is the bad guy and who is just along for the ride, now all we have to do is see what phone they’re operating on.

And, it’s not surprising. As an iPhone user, if your texts come up green, I do think you’re a villain.

dark. Next. Knives Out: What can we expect from the now-confirmed sequel?
