Bong Joon Ho has a list of directors you should be watching, and honestly? We agree!
Bong Joon Ho won Best Director at this year’s Academy Awards, and now he’s sharing his own list of directors to look out for — and we can’t help but agree!
Parasite is the kind of movie that took viewers by storm and claimed many of the top honors at the Academy Awards, including a Best Director win for Bong Joon Ho. From the reception Parasite has received, it’s clear that award was deserved. It also helps that the internet has been in love with Bong this entire award season.
The director became a meme, if you will. Excited to be there at our “local award show,” as he called the Academy Awards, and hanging out with Taika Waititi, he was constantly at the forefront of coverage because well, to be honest, we were all obsessed.
So now, he’s releasing a list of directors he thinks we should all keep our eyes on and appreciate — and he’s right. Publishing as a guest editor for Sight & Sound magazine, Bong provided a list that’s full with brilliant creators behind the camera. Let’s talk about some of the names he included.
One who really stuck out was Ari Aster. Director of films like Hereditary and Midsommar, Aster has been ignored by award circuits despite his films getting critical acclaim. His list also includes directors such as Honey Boy‘s Alma Har’el, Jordan Peele, Hamaguchi Ryusuke, Jennifer Kent, and so many more.
The best part of this list is that it’s just not men and it’s, especially, just not white male directors. It’s a diverse list of talent from all different countries and walks of life, all bringing the world of cinema to life.
Much like Bong himself, this list shows the beauty of creative expression and its importance in the world at large. So seeing this incredibly diverse list of directors being heralded by the man who just took home the Best Director award at the Oscars? A truly amazing thing to see.
