The two-part finale of Doctor Who season 12 begins tonight with “Ascension of the Cybermen,” as Team TARDIS must battle a classic enemy to save the future of humanity.

Somehow, Doctor Who season 12 is almost over. It feels like this round of the Thirteenth Doctor’s adventure’s just began, but we’ve already managed to reach the first half of the season’s two-part finale.

Entitled “Ascension of the Cybermen”, the story appears as though it will pick up right in the aftermath of last week’s episode, and we’ll see the fallout from the Doctor’s decision to ignore Jack Harkness’ warning and give the Lone Cyberman the item it wanted.

Though the story will jump from the early nineteenth century to an era that is only termed “the far future,” we see that not only have the Cybermen returned, it appears that they’ve destroyed much of humanity.

Most of season 12 has been kept under pretty tight wraps, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise at this point that the episode trailer for “Ascension of the Cyberman” contains almost no new information and very little sense of what the story might contain.

Can Team TARDIS defeat the resurrected Cybermen? And if so, at what cost? Plus, how does the ongoing mystery of the Master, the destruction of Gallifrey and last season’s reference to the Timeless Child play into all of this? Or do they? And what of the Ruth Doctor? Will her existence come into play here? Or is that a mystery best left for season 13?

One has to assume that at least some part of this story will deal with at least one of the show’s on-going arcs, since the second half of this finale is named “The Timeless Children”. But how, exactly, that will happen is anybody’s guess.
