The full trailer for Westworld season 3 is here and it is honestly wild
By Lacy Baugher
The absolutely bonkers trailer for the third season of HBO’s Westworld is here and it promises everything from a Dolores-Maeve showdown to the return of The Man in Black.
The long-awaited third season of HBO’s popular/frustrating/amazing/disturbing Western robot series Westworld will (finally!) return to our screens this March.
No, we still don’t really have a firm idea about what’s going on – just that Dolores and several other (mostly) unidentified hosts have escaped the park and crossed into the real (read: human) world. What happens next – and how the hosts will exploit the fact that humans already treat their data like trash – is anyone’s guess. What’s Dolores’ ultimate goal? Does she want to destroy humanity? Or help it evolve?
Your guess is as good as ours.
But if the new trailer for season 3 is anything to go by? Pretty much any wild idea you’ve ever had about what this third outing might be like is probably on the table.
As you can see, stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Tessa Thompson, Jeffrey Wright and Ed Harris are all back for the new season, though there is precious little clarity about who they’re playing, which hosts are in which bodies, or even who is still human (looking at you, Man in Black).
Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul is part of things too, somehow, as as human who somehow gets mixed up with Dolores’ cause.
But the most exciting parts of the trailer are certainly the bits that promises long-awaited confrontations or answers – in even the smallest form. We see a Dolores clad in her traditional blue dress from the series’ first season, sitting with the Man in Black. He’s wearing what looks like hospital clothes – but is this the real world or the park? And when he pops up again in the clip, promising to save the world, when and where is this moment taking place? And is this while our favorite dark antihero is a human billionaire or a host himself?
And then there’s the matter of Maeve, who appears to have woken up inside a different world within the park, who’s being given an assignment to stop Dolores and is shown walking toward the other woman dragging a Japanese sword. Are they enemies for real? Secret allies? Who knows?
Dolores, for her part, seems determined to take down….some unidentified enemy, which may turn out to be a single person, or the entire human race. We see various versions of her involved in car chases, brandishing serious firearms and with a full robotic body. There’s even one blink and you’ll miss it moment where it appears one of arms has been cut off. What is going on?!
We’ll have to wait until next month to find out.
Westworld returns to HBO on Sunday, March 15.
