Zoë Kravitz talks the pressures of becoming the next Catwoman
The Batman is the latest in a long line of Batman adaptations for the big screen. Zoë Kravitz dives into the pressures of being DC’s newest Catwoman.
DC Comics has seen numerous adaptations of its superhero stories over the years, and in particular, Batman seems to be the most popular DC hero to bring to the big screen. Matt Reeves’ The Batman is the latest in a lineup takes on Batman that have come out in recent years, following Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the caped crusader in 2018’s Justice League, and Christian Bale’s rendition of him in The Dark Knight Trilogy.
Batman’s universe has seen so many different portrayals, it’s hard to keep up, but the cast and crew of The Batman seem determined to make the story their own — a hefty goal, all things considered. Zoë Kravitz, who will play Selina Kyle — or Catwoman — in the upcoming movie, shared her own thoughts on the pressure that comes with portraying such a beloved character, especially one fans have seen so many times before.
“It was a little scary, but also whenever I get nervous about something, I feel it pushes me to a better place anyway, so I welcome the nerves,” Kravitz said in an interview with Variety. “If you start focusing too much on what people are going to think you’re doing yourself a disservice, it’s almost like you’re putting your energy in the wrong place. Of course, I want to honor the fans and hope they like what I do with the role, but in order to do what I think I need to do with Catwoman, I have to go internal and forget about the rest of the world.”
Kravitz’s approach is a smart one, especially given how impossible it is to please everyone when it comes to entertainment — and especially when it comes to entertainment that already has an expectant fanbase. But while the actress is setting boundaries for herself, she did acknowledge how much the role means to DC fans. In fact, she explained that receiving excited messages about her casting from people she hardly knew brought this realization upon her.
“All of a sudden, the reality began to sink in about what this means not only to me, but to everybody else culturally — and the fans of this universe are so dedicated and opinionated,” Kravitz said.
She’s certainly right about comic fans being opinionated. Thankfully, the more that comes out about The Batman, the more it seems that the cast and crew are putting their hearts and souls into the film — and that usually garners good results, especially when they’re so dedicated to honoring the source material and fanbase.
