Disney is reportedly developing a live-action adaptation of Rapunzel, and it’s unclear whether it will be related to Tangled or not.

Given how well Disney’s live-action movies have been doing as of late — with last year’s The Lion King and Aladdin both making over $1 billion at the box office and Mulan poised to do the same — it’s not surprising that the company is making its way through its animated lineup of films, turning each of them into a live-action interpretation so audiences can enjoy double the Disney.

And according to The Disney Insider, the studio is currently developing a live-action Rapunzel movie, though, like Mulan, it may have little relation to the animated films that came before it. Disney’s covered the story of Rapunzel through Tangled and its many related series and shorts, but it’s unclear if this new story will be a direct adaptation of that tale or a brand-new take on Rapuzel and her life.

Whichever route the studio decides to go, one thing is certain: Disney lovers will soon have another take on a beloved fairy tale to enjoy.

While there’s currently no timeline suggesting when we could see the film, many of the minds behind the project have already been chosen. Ashleigh Powell will be penning the script, while Michael De Luca and Kristin Burr will serve as producers for the project. Given that Powell and Burr both have experience working on films based on fairy tales, they’re both ideal picks for this project.

The film has no director just yet, though the search is reportedly underway. Given that we’re dealing with a story about a young woman whose freedom is taken away from her, it’d be nice to see a woman in the director’s seat for this film. After all, we could use more women helming movies about women. Fingers crossed.
