Doctor Who season 12 continues tonight with “The Haunting of Villa Diodati”, a period story with appearances from some of England’s greatest writers.

Doctor Who season 12 continues this week with another period adventure – which, thus far have been a highlight of showrunner Chris Chibnall’s time on the show in and and of themselves already. But this one has MARY FREAKING SHELLEY in it.

Get hype, is basically what I’m saying.

Annoyingly, all the promotional materials for the end of season 12 seem much more interested in hyping the two-hour final that starts next week than they do indicating anything about the installment that’s airing before it. Which, from all indications, seems as though it will be a perfectly creepy, atmospheric ghost story about the trip to Switzerland that ultimately led Shelley to write her famous novel, Frankenstein.

(The real-life story behind this trip is wild, y’all, and more people should know about it.)

But, at any rate, a season that has thus far given us intriguing takes on famous historical ladies Ada Lovelace and Noor Inayat Khan (as well as famous historical man Nikola Tesla) seems primed to tackle one of the literature’s greatest female writers, whose fascinating personal story is often overshadowed by the novel she left behind. (Did you guys know she was just eighteen when she wrote Frankenstein? The talent she has! The range!)

Also, there’s ghosts, apparently. And I’m always here for a Doctor Who ghost story.

The trailer for tonight’s installment doesn’t give us much in the way of narrative detail, but everyone sure does look nice in their nineteenth century fashions.
