This week’s Project Runway fashion might look like a step back in time. Can tie dye fabrics be fashion forward, or are they just a bad camp project?
Project Runway is looking to the past for some fashion-forward thinking. While everyone is still processing last week’s Siriano Save, this week’s challenge might have everyone wishing that they weren’t stepping back in time. Can tie dye really be having a fashion moment?
According to Bravo, this week’s Project Runway episode, “Live and Let Tie Dye,” features the following:
"“Tie dye is back in a big way and the designers will need to create their own textiles to elevate the trend from casual to couture. In a twist that may feel more like a trick to the designers, it’s an overnight challenge! The designers go a bit mad working into the wee hours trying to perfect their techniques and complete their high end looks.”"
One aspect of this synopsis is interesting: This week’s challenge is an overnight challenge. While these designers have been dealing with competition pressure, the sleep deprivation factor could impact their final designs. Can anyone really see clearly with no sleep?
As for the challenge itself, the tie dye aspect is an interesting twist. Granted, the designers are not making those camp T-shirts, but they do need to understand the concept of tie dye. Smart color choices and best color placement can have a huge impact on the design.
Even though a concept is trending, it doesn’t mean that everyone should adopt that idea. In some ways, tie dye might not be the best option for certain looks. The designers need to understand the textile and its application.
After last week’s Siriano Save, everyone will have to wait to see if just one designer or two designers go home this week. With only four spots in the finale, the pressure is enormous. Will someone falter right before the finish line?
