Sam Raimi might be the new director for the Doctor Strange sequel
After the first director departed over “creative differences,” Sam Raimi is reportedly now in talks to direct Marvel’s Doctor Strange sequel.
Touted as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “first horror film,” Doctor Strange 2 is one of the most-anticipated Marvel movies headed our way over the next few years. But even with all the excitement surrounding it, the film recently hit a snag: Scott Derrickson, who initially signed on to direct the film, stepped down from the role over “creative differences,” leaving fans to wonder who could possibly take his place.
And we may finally have our answer. Fans of the early-2000s Spider-Man trilogy will be pleased to hear that Sam Raimi is reportedly in talks to take up the role. Although nothing is official just yet, Variety reported the news on Wednesday afternoon. And given the timeline they’re working with, Marvel Studios had better hurry and make the whole thing official. After all, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is supposed to enter production this May.
With Derrickson staying on as executive producer for the film, it’s safe to assume Raimi will have plenty of guidance if he does sign on. And after his work on Drag Me to Hell and the Evil Dead movies, Raimi no doubt has the horror portion of the movie down pat. Combined with his former experience directing Spider-Man, it seems the Doctor Strange sequel will enable him to show off his talents in two separate genres.
Fans also seem confident in his abilities, taking to Twitter to express excitement about the possibility of such an iconic director and producer helming this MCU installment.
Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is currently expected to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2021. Benedict Cumberbatch will be reprising his role as the lead, with Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor returning and Elizabeth Olsen making an appearance as Scarlet Witch. Even if the movie has hit a few bumps in the road recently, this news could prove promising for it — and let’s be honest, it already sounds pretty dang fantastic.
