The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow

Anyone looking for a truly unique SFF read this month should keep an eye out for Alechia Dow’s debut novel, The Sound of Stars. If you’ve any doubt this story is unlike any you’ve read before, take comfort in the fact that its two main characters are “a girl who risks her life for books” and “an alien who loves forbidden pop music.” Now imagine the world resting on these characters’ shoulders.

The girl is Ellie, and she’s living in a facility in New York after aliens have invaded Earth. Deeming humans uncooperative and dangerous (fair), the aliens regulate pretty much everything humans do — and they’ve outlawed all forms of art. Naturally, Ellie still manages to collect books, an act that could get her killed — and very well might when one of the books goes missing.

The pop-music-loving alien is M0Rr1S — and, as you might have guessed, he’s also the one who discovers Ellie’s library and steals one of her books. He’s meant to turn her in to be executed, but instead, the supposedly emotionless alien finds himself drawn to Ellie in the same way he’s drawn to his illegal music. According to the synopsis:

"“The two embark on a wild and dangerous road trip with a bag of books and their favorite albums, all the while making a story and a song of their own that just might save them both.”"

If The Sound of Stars is anywhere near as quirky as its description makes it sound, it’s sure to be a thrilling adventure for SFF readers. It arrives on February 25, and it sounds like the perfect way to round out your February reading (if you’re into the bizarre, that is).
