The Mandalorian’s second season is heading to Disney+ in October
Fans knew the second season of The Mandalorian was coming out this year, but now they have an official date: The new episodes will arrive this October.
With the epic concluding episodes of The Mandalorian, many Star Wars fans are eager to return to Mando’s story — and to see how he fares with returning Baby Yoda to his ancestors. It was confirmed almost immediately after the first season ended that we’d be getting the second one sometime this year. And now viewers have a more concrete timeline: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed during an earnings call that the series will return for its second season this October.
It’s toward the tail end of the year, but the earnings call that yielded the information had other good news in store for fans of The Mandalorian. Iger also seemed confident that the show would continue past season two, which could very well be due to its first-season success. Reportedly, Iger told executives that Disney+ now has 28.6 million paid subscribers. It’s very possible those numbers have to do with the launch of the Star Wars series, which, up until The Witcher hit Netflix, was the most in-demand streaming series back in December.
Iger isn’t just game for more seasons, either. It appears that the studio is also seriously considering gifting Star Wars fans with some spin-off series following the rather eccentric characters Mando comes across on his travels. The CEO mentioned “taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series,” and we have to wonder if that means we’ll see more of Cara Dune or Greef Karga in the streaming service’s future. (Please let it be the first one.)
This is big news, as The Mandalorian was Star Wars‘ first foray into long-form storytelling. But with its Obi-Wan Kenobi series and Rogue One prequel on the way — and potential Mandalorian spin-offs to boot — it seems like the experiment has been deemed a success.
As for what the second season of The Mandalorian will cover in October, it’s likely fans will see more of the galaxy as Mando and Baby Yoda attempt to find someone who can care for the child — and maybe even help him master those Force powers.
