We often see how fans can get about their favorite characters so I started to think about what it would have been like for us fans if we had Twitter as the Harry Potter series came out.

The way fandom is set up these days, a lot of it is based around the idea that fans want what they want and will fight for it and that same principle happened with the Harry Potter series as well. The difference is that we didn’t have Twitter back then.

Now though, looking at how fandoms react to things online after they are done, it is a little concerning because if we’re being honest, we probably would have acted the same way with Potter as well. Imagine when your favorite character died or your favorite ship didn’t happen, you’d probably be mad about it.

I can just see myself launching an entire campaign for the justice of Sirius Black (I still do this now) but maybe it was a good thing that we didn’t have Twitter for the Harry Potter series. We got to read it, see the story unfold, and say “well, okay” and separate ourselves from it in a way that I don’t think happens anymore. We’re so connected to each other and the story that it almost seems like so much of us is invested in this.

Would Twitter have been fun in the Potter fandom? Probably but at least we didn’t amplify the already intense ship wars of the early 2000s and this series.

Next. What is the political world of Harry Potter like?. dark
