S.P.E.W wasn’t featured in the movies but it was an interesting aspect to Hermione Granger that the movies missed out so let’s explore what it means for her character.

Hermione Granger is an icon to many of us. But there are aspects of her character that were left out of the movie that does make her a little bit different. For instance, she is that kind of girl who made S.P.E.W.

Called the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, S.P.E.W was Hermione’s way of helping the House Elves free themselves from servitude. It was all well-meaning but also Hermione Granger, as a teenager, definitely didn’t think about their life outside or our House Elves, as a species, hadn’t ever existed outside of that role (as far as we know) meaning that…there is a lot of work within it.

All that being said, what the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare did show us was that Hermione Granger cared. Cared enough to make a change and stop being a part of the problem, in one way or another. Hermione was important to so many of us because she was just a girl who was trying her best and a lot of the time, her heart was in the right place even if she was a little too young to be trying to do what she was doing.

I do wish we could have see the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare in the movies though. That was a missed opportunity.
