Why do I constantly think about Dudley Dursley?
Dudley Dursley is the kind of character that you are meant to hate when you’re reading the series in the beginning. So what is it about him that keeps us talking?
The Dursleys were characters that we hated for how they treated Harry Potter and Dudley Dursley was a part of that. Dudley is the kid that none of us ever wanted to be (or more like my mother would have yelled at me non-stop if I acted like him) so why is he a character that I think of frequently?
Maybe it is because when you look at the Harry Potter series, he is a character who showed a lot of growth. Dudley went from a character who was insufferable to someone who understood what Harry was going through and apologized to him in his own way.
Dudley, even if he was the worst kind of kid, seemed to care about Harry Potter in his own way. He wanted to be there for his cousin in whatever warped way it was at the end and it made me care about Dudley in a way that I didn’t think was possible.
Maybe it’s because the rest of the family was so terrible but seeing Dudley care and reach out to his cousin, to worry about never seeing him again made this kid that was all about himself and what toys he did or did not have a character that we could actually end up caring about in the end.
So Dudley Dursley was maybe the worst but he grew on me.
