Fans of The Witcher might be waiting a while for Netflix to release season 2, but they now have an animated movie to look forward to in the meantime.

The Witcher has become one of Netflix’s most popular original series, though its first season did have one disappointment at its end: the announcement that the second one wouldn’t arrive until 2021. Fans were not thrilled at the prospect of waiting more than a year to discover what happens to Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. But it looks like we’ll at least have something to hold us over in the interim.

Netflix revealed that there’s an anime movie in the works called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, and The Witcher showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, is in charge of it, along with writer Beau DeMayo. Given that Hissrich will be working on both the series and the movie, fans can at least count on consistency between the stories — and that’s always a plus.

As far as the plot goes, the official synopsis teases a “powerful new threat facing the Continent.” What that threat is remains to be seen, and it’s not clear whether or not we’ll even be following the same characters from the Netflix series — though one can hope the movie adds something to the live-action series, if only something small.

The anime is being brought to Netflix by Studio Mir, the same company that handled The Legend of Korra, so things look promising on that count as well. With the design and writing in good hands, the only real question is how the movie will impact the story we’ve already come to love — because it could easily be a spin-off unrelated to the characters we’ve already met.
