This week’s Project Runway looks to be an emotional runway for the designers. As they get personal with their design inspiration, can they handle the criticism?

Project Runway continues to look for design inspiration in unique ways. While the fan favorite unconventional materials challenge is entertaining, pushing the designers to reveal more personal interpretations on the runway connects with fans. Will this week’s deeply rooted inspiration bring more designers to the brink?

According to Bravo, this week’s Project Runway episode, “There Is Only One You” features the following synopsis:

"“In this week’s challenge, the designers are given a chance to think about their family history and channel those stories and emotions into a look of their choosing. The stakes are high in this one day challenge, as the designers need to face and embrace who they are in order to succeed. Luckily for the designers, there’s a surprise early on that will help boost their chances for success in this Flash Sale Challenge!”"

Looking at the various preview videos, it seems that emotions are on overload in this week’s episode. With such a personal connection to these designs, the runway could be extremely difficult for the bottom designers. How can someone not feel personally invested in these looks.

While the designers have complete freedom to design any look that they want in this challenge, that broad-based scope could actually be stifling. With so much room to create, a designer could feel overwhelmed. Add the pressure of creating a look that is deeply personal and the challenge is going to be emotional.

Given that this week’s challenge is a Flash Sale, the designers should take that aspect into consideration. While many of them might want to push boundaries, a flash sale look needs to have some broad appeal. Not everyone can wear an evening gown in their everyday life.

While last week’s episode saw another designer level for her inability to make a statement on the runway, it will be interesting to see if any designer really takes a risk with this challenge. So far, there are several designers who are playing it safe. Maybe the personal inspiration could have some designers step outside of their comfort zone.
