The Good Place season 4 episode 10 review: Janet marbles and time limits
The Good Place returns from its hiatus with time ticking down before the Judge ends the Earth. Can the Soul Squad come up with a better afterlife?
Welcome back to The Good Place! Everything is great!
Except that we only have a few episodes left of this wondrous show. So, how do we return from this mini-hiatus? Let’s charge on ahead!
Not-So-Short Summary & Analysis
Neutral Janet voids are the most nothing. The Judge is still searching for the world ending button clicker, and the Soul Squad is running out of time.
Chidi channels Judith Shklar (and a pair of roller skates from Disco Janet). The cruelty of the punishment doesn’t match the cruelty of the life that was led. It’s a problem of justice.
They land on the option: Bad Place for negative points, Good Place a million points or higher, and a Medium Place for everyone else. It’s like Cincinnati! They easily convince the Good Place crew to go with it. The Bad Place crew? Shawn?
He’s in! Except it’s Shawn, and he’s not actually in. He doesn’t care if everyone loses, as long as Michael loses. “New ideas are gross!” he exclaims. Nothing else matters.
So they offer themselves — all four of them and Michael tortured forever — if Shawn agrees to go with their Medium Place plan. Of course, he doesn’t. He wants everything.
And now they’re down to the last Janet. Our Janet.
So, they all go into Janet’s void and convince the Judge to stay and listen with Timothy Olyphant. Basically they pitch the exact show we have just watched for the last four seasons. You’re presented with challenges and in the end, you’re evaluated, then rebooted with a vague recollection of what you previously went through.
Eventually, people will make enough good choices to get them into the Good Place.
And then Shawn passes and we’re back to the Earth getting erased. Except fighting Michael is the most fun he’s ever had. Marc Evan Jackson is absolutely wondrous in this episode, looking like he’s having an absolute blast playing the demon.
So, what’s first?
Best One-Liners & Favorite Moments
“I already showed her the light — she wasn’t impressed,” Janet explains to Michael regarding swaying the Judge.
The computer in Bad Janet’s void just reminds me of my childhood. Remember all the pop ups that would come up every time you tried to do something?
There were so many excellent Jason lines that I didn’t even have time to type them all down. Just know that we will miss our Florida Man when this show ends.
