There’s really no contest when it comes to which franchise saw the biggest and best final installment this year: Avengers: Endgame was so successful that people are still raving about it months later. Not only that, but the film did justice to the characters fans have come to know and love and managed to keep all of its storylines intact. Clearly, the creative team for Marvel knows what they’re doing.

Even if Avengers: Endgame made us cry — a lot — it served as an ode to the past decade of Marvel movies, and it gave Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, and Scarlett Johannson’s Black Widow the sendoffs they deserved.

In addition to its emotional impact, Endgame had plenty of action and suspense, and it constantly toyed with viewers expectations. Within the first hour alone, there were numerous moments that were double-take worthy because, really, how many of us expected the time jump or for Tony Stark to finally have the family he always wanted?

And even with its murky time-travel plot, Endgame hits all the beats of its story, delivering a conclusion that feels as satisfying as it is devastating. It also leaves the future of the MCU open, bestowing it on the heroes that once served as side characters. This passing of the torch doesn’t always work, but it worked here. Endgame only made Marvel fans more excited about what’s to come during Phase 4 and Phase 5.
