Why Meg March was a great character for Emma Watson to play
Meg March is nowhere near the most important sister in Little Women but it was the perfect role for Emma Watson because she is very much the embodiment of that character.
There are plenty of iconic characters out there in the world and Meg March is one of them. Brought to life by Emma Watson in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, the character is not particularly the sister many of us relate to. But it works for Emma Watson.
Out of all the characters of Little Women, Meg March is the one who is content in her life and isn’t beholden to the ideas of her sister Jo. For Emma Watson, she’s always been the kind of actress who takes on the characters who want to explore the world and learn everything there is to know out there and so Meg is a nice contrast to that.
She’s not a Hermione Granger or a Belle but instead, she’s just happy to be with her family and live her life as a married woman and when Jo wants Meg to go out and be an actress, Meg points out that that isn’t the life for her. She doesn’t want to be something else, she’s happy and to see that portrayed on screen is almost as important as the women who want to explore the world and learn everything out there.
I don’t want Emma Watson to stop playing these characters but it is nice to see a change in her roles for a bit. She fit in nicely in the movie and it was a great performance from Watson overall and is an incredible movie.
