How To Get Away With Murder (ABC, 2014-present)
One of the only few major network shows on our list, ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder unapologetically came onto the scene in 2014 and hasn’t looked back since. The series centers around a bisexual law professor and her group of student aids who can’t seem to stay away from murders. Seriously, these people have the WORST luck when it comes to committing crimes. Aside from the black female lead, the show also featured two gay men as series regulars and presents them as one of the central love stories in the series. The show would go on to win an array of awards including Emmys, NAACP and GLAAD Media Awards.
Led by acting powerhouse Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, the show became must-see tv for years with it’s flashbacks and seasonal whodunits. Jack Falahee’s Connor Walsh plays a student of Annalise’s who seduces and then falls in love with IT expert Oliver Hampton, played by Conrad Ricamora. The two would eventually defy the odds of accidentally getting killed or imprisoned for helping cover up a murder and marry in season five. Annalise, who is originally married to man, would become involved with two women at different points of the series, including fellow attorneys Eve Rothlo (Famke Janssen) and Liza Weil’s Bonnie Winterbottom.
The series is currently on its sixth and final season, with one more murder mystery to unveil. This show was always passionate and powerful, at times being some of the best storytelling on television, network or otherwise. It’s worth noting that Viola Davis become the first black actress to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for this role. While it definitely should’ve happened sooner, we couldn’t be happier that the paid attention to Annalise Keating and the masterful work of Viola Davis.
