Jane the Virgin (The CW, 2014-2019)
The strangely named Jane the Virgin is a romantic comedy/satirical telenovela based on the Venezuelan series Juana la Virgen. The series follows Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) a devout Latina virgin who is accidentally artificially inseminated during a visit to her gynecologist (I know, just go with it). Hilarity ensues as the pregnancy brings Jane’s extended family together and we also explore Jane’s love triangle with devoted boyfriend Michael or biological baby daddy Rafael.
While the series starts off with only one queer character, Rafael’s alcoholic sister Yara, who just so happens to be the gynecologist who accidentally knocks up Jane, the show would expand its queer character list in later seasons. Yael Grobglas’s former mean girl Petra Solano plays Rafael’s wife but following their divorce, Petra falls in love with her criminal defense attorney Jane “JR” Ramos, played by Rosario Dawson. The show’s depiction of Petra and JR’s romance is one of the finer points of the later seasons. Former Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey was a recurring love interest for Jane in season three and four and is bisexual.
The show would win a variety of awards including a Golden Globe, a Peabody and an AFI Program of the Year award. While the show sometimes struggled with low ratings, it developed a strong fan base and never lost its praise from critics. If you’re looking for a heartwarming, hilarious and sometimes outrageous show that treats queer characters just as crazy as everyone one else on the show, this is for you.
