Best of the decade: What were the top 10 LGBTQ+ shows of the 2010s?

Pose (FX, 2018-present)
If there is one show that has changed the landscape for LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream television, it is Pose. Another groundbreaking show from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, Pose follows a group of queer and trans models and dancers in the 80s and 90s, focusing on the “ballroom culture” of that era. Featured characters would compete in for trophies and recognition, while supporting each other as members of chosen families known as Houses. The series also examined the love lives of said queer characters, some who were HIV positive, and often involved with other gender-nonconforming individuals.
The stellar cast includes a mix of old and new talent with the likes of Billy Porter, MJ Rodriguez, Angelica Ross, Kate Mara, and Evan Peters. Particular standouts include Indya Moore’s Angel, who begins a relationship with married man Stan Bowes (Peters), Porter’s portrayal of Pray Tell, emcee extraordinaire of the balls, and Dominique Jackson’s Elektra.
The series brings a talent cast of queer and trans African-American characters in a way never seen before on any television series. The show resonates on several levels, examining harsh topics such as substance abuse, sex work and living with HIV, while balancing it out with moments of celebration and sass. Porter was notably nominated, and won, the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, becoming the first gay black man to win. The show would also win its own Golden Globe for Best Television Series.
