There are often moments on Watchmen when you’re moved to tears because of the power the show has, but Angela taking on the Seventh Kalvary is maybe the best yet.

Watchmen continues to put us in a state of shock and awe each week but there is something extremely powerful about seeing Angela standing up against the Seventh Kalvary all alone in order to try and protect Doctor Manhattan.

After we learn all about the relationship that Angela has had with Doctor Manhattan throughout the years, he points out that in this moment, when she is willing to go out and fight an entire group of racist men in Rorschach masks for him, that it is the moment in his strange idea of time that he fell in love with her.

But watching as Angela, despite being heavily outnumbered and, seemingly trapped, go out and fight against the racists who want her and Doctor Manhattan dead, was moving. Not because she was taking a stand against the Seventh Kalvary, she’s been doing that week after week. But rather because she was fighting for what she loved, not because of something she hates much like the Seventh Kalvary are.

They are carrying out these terrible deeds because of their own hatred and Angela, in her greatest, is doing everything to protect what she loves. That understanding and that beauty is something that the show weaves into many of their characters.

The things they’re doing, the way they are trying to defend those around them, it is, mainly, for love and trying to protect what is theirs from the selfish men in the world. Those who want power and are willing to do anything for it are not the heroes of Watchmen. That title goes to characters like Angela who would rather go up against racists and those who hate her to fight for what she loves.

Next. Watchmen takes on Dr. Manhattan and Angela’s relationship in a beautiful ode. dark
