Episode 8: “Dangling Man”

In this episode, the Duke of Windsor, the former King Edward VIII, is told by his doctor that his cancer is progressing and he doesn’t have long to live. He tries to go on with business as usual, operating like he isn’t completely sick. Once the Queen hears about the Duke’s severe illness, she comes to visit him in Paris.

Princess Ann is having a casual affair with Andrew Parker-Bowles, who was the on-and-off boyfriend of Camila Shand. Interestingly, Prince Charles and Camila Shand also started dating. Princess Ann warns her brother to not get played by Camila — to see their new relationship as purely fun.

We’re shown in this episode that the Duke of Windsor and Prince Charles are writing to each other. The Duke sees himself in Prince Charles, and this is alarming for the royal family. The Duke gives these letters to the Queen to help her understand her son better, but instead, it worries her. Prince Charles is in love with a commoner named Camila. The Duke of Windsor abdicated the throne because he was in love with a commoner/divorcee, and much like Prince Charles, he is very much individualistic and sensitive. The House of Windsor is careful about making sure that another abdication would never happen again.

The Duke dies at the end of the episode, leaving a distressed Wallis Simpson by herself.
