The Crown: Recapping every episode from the show’s third season
Episode 6: “Tywysog Cymru”
PM Wilson thinks it will be a good idea to make Prince Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales more inclusive of Welsh people. The last Prince of Wales never visited, and Welsh nationalism is rising because of it. To correct that, the PM suggests that the Prince should go to a Welsh university to learn the language so he can give his speech at the investiture in Welsh.
Prince Charles has no interest in this and is annoyed that he’s being pulled away from his theater studies at Cambridge University. Prince Charles is the black sheep of the family, and his family has been obsessed with making sure he’s ready to be king since he was a child. His sensitive tendencies and anxious demeanor make the Queen and Prince Philip even harder on him.
The university Prince Charles is sent to is Aberystwyth in Wales. His professor, Dr. Tedi Millward, is the vice president of Plaid Cymru, a political party that supports Welsh Independence, and he is a Republican nationalist. He believes the office of the Prince of Wales was imposed on Welsh citizens. He doesn’t want to be Prince Charles’ tutor, but his point of view changes when he realizes that the Prince giving a speech in Welsh will make an important statement that could help preserve the Welsh language.
Unexpectedly, the two men grow to respect and like being around each other. Prince Charles’ speech is successful, and he even adds his own part to the speech already written out for him. Prince Charles learns the importance of respecting Welsh identity, and this experience makes him a very present Prince of Wales for the country. “Tywysog Cymru,” the title of the episode, means Prince of Wales in Welsh.
