The Crown: Recapping every episode from the show’s third season
Episode 10: “Cri de Coeur”
Princess Margaret finds out that Snowdon has been cheating on her. Snowdon is a very liberal man who doesn’t believe in monogamy, but because he loves Princess Margaret and wants to impress his classist mother, he agreed to marry into the royal family.
During this time, Snowdon isn’t staying in Buckingham Palace; he’s staying at a cottage he owns outside of the city with the woman he was seeing. Since she feels neglected, Margaret’s friends take her away on a mini-vacation. There she meets a much younger man named Roddy Llewlyn, and they develop a love affair. Princess Margaret enjoys being doted on by this man. But when they take a vacation to Mustique, Margaret’s favorite place, paparazzi catches the couple in a compromising position.
Princess Margaret is all over the papers, and the royal family is embarrassed by the situation. She takes Roddy home with her, and Snowdon is there waiting for her. Roddy leaves once the argument between Snowden and Margaret reveals that this is a really complicated relationship. Princess Margaret tries to stop him, but Snowden tells her that, if she chases after him, they are done. She runs after Roddy anyway, but he is nowhere to be found.
After being left by Roddy and Snowden never coming back, Princess Margaret overdoses on pills. The Queen visits her, showing sadness in a way we’ve never seen before. She expresses how important Margaret is to her and that life without her would be unbearable.
The episode ends with The Queen’s Jubilee, her celebration for being Queen thus far. She doesn’t feel she deserves it because her country is at a low point, another Prime Minister is being replaced, and some family members are distressed. Regardless, the Queen goes on.
